What are MCTs?
Let’s start with: what exactly are MCTs? MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglycerides, which are three fatty acid groups with a glycerol backbone.
Many people hear triglycerides and immediately associate the terms with heart disease and bad cholesterol. But some triglycerides are actually considered to be healthy fats. The chain length of the fatty acid determines what category each fatty acid fits into: short-, medium- and long-chain.
- Short-chain fatty acids function as friendly gut bacteria that ferment fiber in your colon. They provide the main source of energy for cells lining your colon.
- Medium-chain triglycerides are commonly extracted from food sources such as coconut oil and palm oil.
- Long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) or long-chain fatty acids are obtained through most fats and oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, soybean oil, fish, nuts, avocados, and other meats.
What makes Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) different?
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) can be absorbed intact by the body, and are transported to the liver intact. MCTs are thus absorbed by the body without any metabolic steps. MCTs can also directly enter the mitochondria, the cells powerhouse, and help it produce energy.
Long-chain triglycerides (LCTs) are mostly metabolized in the intestine, which results in their incorporation into chylomicrons, the body’s fat transporting systems. This results in long-chain fatty acids either being used by the cells, or stored as fat.
The raw facts about MCT and Coconut Oil
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are made by refining raw coconut or palm oil to remove impurities and other compounds. This process concentrates the MCTs that are naturally found in the raw coconut or palm oil.
MCT oil generally contain 50 to 80 % caprylic acid and 20 to 50 % caproic acid.
Coconut oil is made from copra, which is the kernel or meat of the coconut.
Coconut oil naturally contains MCTs, namely 42% lauric acid, 7% caprylic acid, and 5% capric acid. In addition to containing MCTs, coconut oil also contains LCTs and unsaturated fats.
Are MCTs safe to consume? Is MCT oil safe to use?
Coconut oil is packed full of MCTs, so likely you have consumed MCTs before without even knowing it! The few drops that you will ingest with your full extract cannabis oil each day is too small an amount of oil to have any significant impact on liver health – even when used for extended periods.
